Call 562-435-8339 or book online

Daily cleaning

  • Brush your dentures every day, inside and out, with a soft denture brush
  • Use a denture cleanser or mild soap, not regular toothpaste. Toothpaste is too rough and can scratch them
  • Rinse your dentures after every meal
  • Hold them over a folded towel or a sink of water while cleaning, so they don’t break if dropped
  • Never use bleach, which can weaken dentures and damage metal clasps

At night

  • Take your dentures out at night to give your gums a rest
  • Keep them in water or a denture-soaking solution, so they don’t dry out and lose their shape
  • Never use hot or boiling water, which can warp them

Care for your mouth

  • Gently brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth every day
  • If you have a partial denture, brush your natural teeth carefully, especially where the clasps touch

When to call us

  • Your dentures feel loose, rub, or cause sore spots
  • A tooth is chipped, worn, or broken
  • Your dentures have cracked or don’t fit like they used to
  • You have a sore in your mouth that hasn’t healed in two weeks

Please don’t try to adjust or repair dentures at home, and don’t use store-bought glue or repair kits. A small change in fit is usually a quick fix in our office.

Regular checkups matter

Your gums and jawbone slowly change shape over the years, so even well-made dentures can loosen. Regular visits let Dr. Salem check your mouth, adjust or reline your dentures, and spot problems early. Worn dentures can also make chewing harder and change the look of your face, so it’s worth replacing them when needed.

Why patients choose Salem Dentistry for dentures

  • One dentist from start to finish. Dr. Salem makes your dentures and cares for them at every visit afterward.
  • Adjustments and simple repairs in our office, often the same day.
  • Relines and larger repairs handled by Dr. Salem with a trusted dental lab.
  • Same-day appointments are often available for broken or sore dentures.
  • Implants here too. If your dentures keep slipping, Dr. Salem places dental implants that can hold them firmly in place.
  • All PPO plans and Medi-Cal Dental accepted.
  • Care in three languages: English, German, and Farsi.

Questions patients ask

How often should I clean my dentures?
Brush them once a day and rinse them after every meal. Soak them overnight in water or a denture solution.

Can I sleep with my dentures in?
It’s best not to. Taking them out at night lets your gums rest and helps prevent sore spots and infections.

Why do my dentures feel loose?
Your gums and jawbone change shape over time, so dentures that once fit well can loosen. An adjustment or a reline usually solves it. If you find you need denture adhesive every day just to keep them in, it’s time for a check.

How long does a repair take?
Adjustments and simple repairs are often done the same day in our office. Relines and larger repairs go to our dental lab and take a little longer. We’ll tell you how long when you come in.

How long do dentures last?
With good care, dentures usually last about 5 to 10 years. They may need relining along the way as your mouth changes.

Does insurance cover new dentures?
Many dental insurance plans help cover new dentures every few years. We accept all PPO dental plans and Medi-Cal Dental, and we do not accept HMO plans. Call us and we’ll check your benefits for you.

My dentures were made at another office. Can you repair them?
We adjust and repair the dentures made in our office. If your dentures came from somewhere else and no longer fit, Dr. Salem can examine you and talk with you about a new set.

How often should I come in?
At least once a year, even if you have no natural teeth. Dr. Salem checks the fit of your dentures and the health of your gums and mouth.

Partial Dentures in Long Beach, CA: Natural-Looking Replacements for Missing Teeth

Missing one or more teeth can make it harder to chew, speak, and smile with confidence. A partial denture is a removable, natural-looking appliance that fills those gaps without surgery. At Salem Dentistry in Long Beach, Dr. Roxana Salem, DDS, designs and fits every partial denture herself, so it looks natural and feels comfortable.

Call 562-435-8339 or book online

Why patients choose Salem Dentistry for partial dentures

  • One dentist from start to finish. You see Dr. Salem at every visit, from your first exam to your final fitting.
  • Three types to choose from. We offer metal framework, all-acrylic, and flexible partial dentures.
  • We beat competitor prices. Bring a written treatment plan and price from another office, and we will beat it for comparable services.
  • Adjustments and repairs in our office, often the same day.
  • Implants here too. If you’d like a fixed option now or later, Dr. Salem places dental implants in the same office.
  • All PPO plans and Medi-Cal Dental accepted.
  • Care in three languages: English, German, and Farsi.

What is a partial denture?

A partial denture replaces one or several missing teeth. It has replacement teeth set in a gum-colored base and stays in place by attaching to your natural teeth. You take it out to clean it and to sleep.

Types of partial dentures we offer

  • Metal framework partials have a thin, strong metal base with acrylic teeth. They are the most durable and usually the most comfortable for long-term wear.
  • All-acrylic partials cost less and are often used as a temporary solution or while you heal. They are bulkier and less durable than metal.
  • Flexible partials are thin, lightweight, and metal-free, with gum-colored clasps that blend in with your smile.

Dr. Salem will look at your teeth, gums, and budget and recommend the type that fits you best.

Why replace missing teeth?

When a tooth is missing, the teeth around the gap begin to shift and tilt, and your bite changes. This can make chewing harder, put extra stress on your remaining teeth, and change the way your face and smile look. A partial denture fills the space, keeps your other teeth in position, restores your ability to chew, and gives you a complete smile again.

Is a partial denture right for me?

A partial denture is a good choice when you are missing some teeth and your remaining teeth are healthy. It is less invasive and usually less expensive than other ways of replacing teeth, and it can be added to later if you lose another tooth.

Keeping your natural teeth is always the first goal. If that isn’t possible, a full denture may be the right solution. We also offer dental implants, including implant-supported dentures that are fixed in place and don’t come out.

How it works

  1. Exam. Dr. Salem examines your teeth and gums, takes X-rays if needed, and explains your options and costs.
  2. Impressions. She takes impressions of your mouth so your partial is made to fit you exactly.
  3. Try-in. You try the partial before it’s finished, so the fit, bite, and look can be checked.
  4. Fitting. Dr. Salem fits your finished partial and shows you how to put it in, take it out, and care for it.
  5. Adjustments. If a spot feels sore or loose, come back and she’ll adjust it, often the same day.

Caring for your partial denture

  • Take it out and rinse it after eating
  • Brush it every day with a soft brush and denture cleaner, not regular toothpaste
  • Soak it overnight in water or denture solution
  • Clean it over a towel or a sink of water so it won’t break if dropped
  • Don’t bend the clasps or try to adjust it yourself
  • Keep up with your regular checkups and oral care

See our denture care page for more tips.

Questions patients ask

How much does a partial denture cost?
It depends on the type of partial and how many teeth it replaces. Partial dentures are one of the most affordable ways to replace missing teeth, and you’ll get a written price before we start. If you have a written treatment plan and price from another office and choose comparable services with us, we will beat that price.

Do you take my insurance?
We accept all PPO dental plans and Medi-Cal Dental. We do not accept HMO plans. Call us and we’ll check your benefits for you.

Can I eat with a partial denture?
Yes. It takes a little time to adjust, so start with soft foods, chew slowly, and chew on both sides of your mouth. Soon you’ll be able to enjoy most of the foods you love. Avoid very hard or sticky foods.

Can I sleep with my partial denture in?
It’s best not to. Taking it out at night lets your gums rest, makes it easy to clean, and protects both the partial and your natural teeth if you clench or grind in your sleep.

Will people be able to tell I’m wearing one?
Partials are made to match your natural teeth and gums. If visible metal clasps concern you, ask about flexible partials, which have gum-colored clasps.

How long does a partial denture last?
With good care, a partial can last for many years. Your mouth changes over time, so it may need adjusting or relining along the way.

What if my partial breaks or feels loose?
Call us at 562-435-8339. We adjust and repair partial dentures in our office, often the same day.

What if I lose another tooth?
In many cases, a tooth can be added to your existing partial, which is quicker and costs less than making a new one.

Immediate Dentures in Long Beach, CA: Never Go a Day Without Teeth

If you need to have all of your remaining teeth removed, you shouldn’t have to go without teeth while you heal. With immediate dentures, you leave your extraction appointment with a full smile the same day. At Salem Dentistry in Long Beach, Dr. Roxana Salem plans your immediate dentures ahead of time, so they’re ready the moment your teeth are removed.

Call 562-435-8339 or book online to schedule a denture consultation.

Why patients choose Salem Dentistry for immediate dentures

  • One dentist from planning to final fit. You see Dr. Salem at every visit.
  • Extractions and dentures in the same office. Dr. Salem removes most teeth herself, so your dentures go in right after.
  • Adjustments here, often the same day. Sore spots are usually fixed in one short visit.
  • Nitrous oxide available. Laughing gas helps if you feel nervous.
  • All PPO plans and Medi-Cal Dental accepted.
  • Same-day appointments often available.
  • English, German, and Farsi spoken.

What are immediate dentures?

Immediate dentures are made before your teeth are removed and placed right after the extractions. You are never seen without teeth, and you start getting used to eating and speaking with your new dentures right away. The denture also acts like a bandage over your gums while they heal.

Immediate dentures vs. regular dentures

  • Immediate dentures are placed the same day your teeth are removed. You keep a full smile the whole time, but they need adjustments as your gums heal.
  • Regular dentures are made after your gums have healed, which usually takes a few months. They fit closely from the start, but you are without teeth while you wait.

Dr. Salem will talk with you about your needs, your budget, and your priorities, and help you choose.

What to expect

  1. Planning. Dr. Salem examines your mouth and takes impressions or scans of your teeth and gums.
  2. Your dentures are made. The dental lab creates your custom dentures before your extraction appointment.
  3. Extraction day. Your teeth are removed and your new dentures are placed right away.
  4. Healing. Your gums and jawbone change shape as they heal. Dr. Salem sees you for check-ups and adjusts your dentures to keep them comfortable.
  5. Final fit. Once healing is complete, usually after a few months, your dentures are relined for a lasting fit. In some cases, a new set is made.

Caring for your immediate dentures

  • Follow all instructions after your extractions
  • Keep your follow-up visits, since adjustments are a normal part of healing
  • Clean your dentures daily and rinse them after meals
  • Call us about sore spots instead of waiting, since a quick adjustment usually fixes them

Our denture care page has more detail on daily cleaning.

Questions patients ask

Will my immediate dentures fit right away?
They are made to fit as closely as possible, but your gums change quickly after extractions. Expect a few adjustments in the first weeks. That is normal.

Why do they get loose after a while?
As your gums heal, they shrink, which leaves space under the denture. A reline fills that space so the denture fits snugly again.

Does it hurt?
Your mouth is fully numb for the extractions. Afterward, soreness is usually managed with the medication Dr. Salem recommends, and it eases over the first several days.

Do I sleep in them?
Dr. Salem will give you instructions for the first night. After the first day, most patients take their dentures out at night to rest their gums.

What can I eat?
Start with soft foods such as soup, eggs, yogurt, and mashed potatoes. Add firmer foods slowly as your gums heal and you get used to chewing.

Will I need a second set of dentures?
Many patients keep their immediate dentures after a reline. Others choose a new set once healing is complete. Dr. Salem will tell you which makes sense for you.

What if I’m only losing some of my teeth?
A partial denture may be a better fit, and it can also be planned ahead so you don’t leave with a gap.

Does insurance cover immediate dentures?
We accept all PPO plans and Medi-Cal Dental. Coverage varies, so we check your plan before you start. If you don’t have insurance, call us for pricing.

ClearCorrect Clear Aligners in Long Beach, CA: Straighter Teeth Without Braces

Want straighter teeth without a mouthful of metal? At Salem Dentistry in Long Beach, Dr. Roxana Salem offers ClearCorrect, clear removable aligners that gently straighten your teeth while hardly anyone notices.

Call 562-435-8339 or book online to find out if ClearCorrect is right for you.

Why patients choose Salem Dentistry for clear aligners

  • One dentist from start to finish. Dr. Salem plans your treatment and sees you at your check-ins.
  • Digital scans. Your aligners are made from a digital scan of your teeth, with no messy putty.
  • An honest answer. If aligners aren’t the right fit for your teeth, Dr. Salem will tell you and explain your options.
  • Advanced cosmetic training. Dr. Salem completed a year-long Comprehensive Esthetic & Restorative Residency.
  • All your dental care in one office. Cleanings and checkups continue here during treatment.
  • English, German, and Farsi spoken.

How ClearCorrect works

ClearCorrect uses a series of thin, clear plastic aligners made just for your teeth. Each set moves your teeth a little at a time until they reach their new position.

The aligners come out when you eat, brush, and floss. For the best results, you’ll wear them 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth.

How clear aligners differ from braces

  • Nearly invisible, so people see your smile, not your treatment
  • Smooth plastic, with no brackets or wires
  • Removable for meals, so there are no food restrictions
  • Easy brushing and flossing
  • Fewer emergency visits, since there’s nothing to break or come loose

Is ClearCorrect right for me?

ClearCorrect works well for many mild to moderate alignment problems, including:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Rotated or twisted teeth
  • Teeth that shifted after braces

If your case is more complex, Dr. Salem will talk with you honestly about the best option for your smile. The only way to know for sure is a consultation.

What to expect

  1. Your first visit. Dr. Salem examines your teeth, talks with you about your goals, and takes a digital scan.
  2. Your custom plan. She creates a treatment plan showing how your teeth will move from start to finish.
  3. Your aligners. You switch to a new set every one to two weeks. Each set moves your teeth a little closer to their final position.
  4. Check-ins. Dr. Salem sees you along the way to make sure everything stays on track.
  5. Your new smile. When treatment is complete, you get retainers to keep your teeth in place.

Questions patients ask

How long does treatment take?
It depends on how much your teeth need to move. Small corrections can take a few months, and larger ones a year or more. Dr. Salem gives you an estimate at your consultation.

Do aligners hurt?
You’ll feel pressure for the first few days of each new set. That’s a sign your teeth are moving, and it fades quickly.

Can I eat or drink with my aligners in?
Only water. Take them out for meals and other drinks, then brush before putting them back in.

How do I clean my aligners?
Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and rinse with cool water. Hot water can warp the plastic. Keep up your regular brushing and flossing too.

Will I need attachments on my teeth?
Some cases need small tooth-colored bumps that help the aligners grip. They’re removed when treatment ends.

Will I need a retainer afterward?
Yes. Teeth tend to drift back without one, so retainers protect your result.

Am I too old for aligners?
No. Adults of any age can straighten their teeth as long as their teeth and gums are healthy.

How much does ClearCorrect cost, and does insurance help?
The cost depends on how many aligners you need. Some PPO plans include orthodontic benefits, and we’ll check your plan for you. HSA and FSA funds can usually be used. Call 562-435-8339 for details.

Call 562-435-8339 or book online

Why patients choose Salem Dentistry for wisdom teeth

  • Honest advice. We only recommend removal when it’s truly needed.
  • The right care for your case. Dr. Salem removes most wisdom teeth here in our office. If yours are deeply impacted or sit close to a nerve, she refers you to a trusted oral surgeon and explains why.
  • One dentist from start to finish. You see Dr. Salem at every visit, from the X-ray to your follow-up.
  • Comfort comes first. We numb the area completely, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available if you’re nervous.
  • Support during recovery. You go home with clear instructions and can call us with any question.
  • Same-day appointments are often available for tooth pain.
  • All PPO plans and Medi-Cal Dental accepted.
  • Care in three languages: English, German, and Farsi.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are your third molars, at the very back of your mouth. Some people’s wisdom teeth come in straight and healthy and never need to be removed. Often, though, there isn’t enough space, and they come in crooked or stay trapped under the gum. These are called impacted wisdom teeth.

Signs your wisdom teeth may need attention

  • Pain or pressure at the back of your mouth
  • Swollen, tender, or bleeding gums near the back teeth
  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • A bad taste or bad breath that won’t go away
  • Food getting trapped around a partly erupted tooth

Some wisdom teeth cause problems without any pain at all, which is why regular X-rays are important.

When should wisdom teeth be removed?

Dr. Salem watches your wisdom teeth on your regular X-rays and lets you know if they’re likely to cause trouble. Removal is often recommended when wisdom teeth are impacted, coming in crooked, causing pain or infection, or damaging the teeth next to them.

Removal is usually easier in the late teens and early twenties, when the roots aren’t fully formed and healing tends to be faster.

What happens during removal?

  1. Exam and X-rays. Dr. Salem checks how the teeth are positioned and explains every step, so you know exactly what to expect.
  2. Numbing. She numbs the area completely so you stay comfortable. If you feel nervous, nitrous oxide is available to help you relax.
  3. Removal. Depending on how the teeth are positioned, this can take from a few minutes to somewhat longer.
  4. Going home. You leave with gauze and clear written instructions. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, so you can usually drive yourself home.

Recovery tips

  • Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding for the first few hours
  • Use an ice pack on your cheek to reduce swelling
  • Eat soft foods like yogurt, soup, and smoothies (with a spoon) for a few days
  • Don’t drink through a straw, smoke, or spit forcefully for at least 3 days
  • Take pain relievers as directed
  • Gently rinse with warm salt water starting the day after

Most people feel better within a few days.

Possible complications

Complications are not common, but it’s good to know about them:

  • Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket comes loose too early. It causes throbbing pain a few days later, and it is easy to treat in the office.
  • Numbness can occur, rarely, when a nearby nerve is irritated, affecting the lip, chin, or tongue. This is usually temporary.

Call us at 562-435-8339 if your pain gets worse after a few days, if bleeding won’t stop, or if you develop a fever or increasing swelling.

Questions patients ask

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. Wisdom teeth that come in straight, are healthy, and can be kept clean can often stay. Dr. Salem will show you your X-rays and explain her recommendation.

Will Dr. Salem remove my wisdom teeth herself?
In most cases, yes. After looking at your X-rays, she’ll tell you whether she can remove them in our office or whether a complex case would be safer with an oral surgeon. Either way, you’ll leave your visit knowing the plan.

Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?
The area is completely numb during the procedure, so you may feel pressure but should not feel pain. Soreness afterward is normal and usually eases within a few days.

How long is recovery?
Most people feel better within a few days and return to work or school within a day or two. Swelling is usually at its worst on the second or third day, then improves.

Can I drive myself home?
Usually, yes. We use local numbing and nitrous oxide, which wears off within minutes.

What is the best age to have wisdom teeth removed?
The late teens and early twenties are usually easiest, but adults of any age can have them removed when there’s a problem.

Do you take my insurance?
We accept all PPO dental plans and Medi-Cal Dental. We do not accept HMO plans. Call us and we’ll check your benefits for you.

When is wisdom tooth pain an emergency?
If you have swelling in your face or jaw along with a fever, or any trouble swallowing or breathing, go to the nearest emergency room right away.

Porcelain Veneers in Long Beach, CA: A Brighter, Natural-Looking Smile

Do you hide your smile because of stained, chipped, or uneven teeth? Porcelain veneers can give you a brighter, more even smile that still looks natural. At Salem Dentistry in Long Beach, Dr. Roxana Salem, DDS, uses her advanced training in esthetic dentistry to design veneers that fit your face, your features, and your goals.

Call 562-435-8339 or book online

Why patients choose Salem Dentistry for veneers

  • Advanced esthetic training. Dr. Salem completed the Comprehensive Esthetic & Restorative Residency at the Esthetic Professionals Dental Educational Center (2016–17).
  • See your new smile first. You try the look on your own teeth before your veneers are made.
  • A smile designed for your face, not a one-size-fits-all look.
  • One dentist from start to finish. You see Dr. Salem at every visit, from planning to final placement.
  • Honest advice. If whitening, bonding, or clear aligners would serve you better, she’ll tell you.
  • High-quality porcelain, including E.max, chosen for your case.
  • Digital scans, no messy impressions.
  • Care in three languages: English, German, and Farsi.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They cover imperfections and change the color, shape, or size of your teeth, so your smile looks the way you want it to.

Veneers can help with:

  • Stains that whitening can’t remove
  • Chipped or worn teeth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that are uneven, too small, or oddly shaped
  • Teeth that are slightly crooked

Benefits of porcelain veneers

  • A natural look that matches your smile
  • Strong resistance to stains from coffee, tea, and wine
  • Gentle on your gums
  • Long-lasting, often 10 to 15 years or more with good care
  • Brighter, whiter teeth

Porcelain or composite?

Veneers can be made from porcelain or from tooth-colored composite resin.

  • Porcelain veneers look the most like natural enamel, resist stains, and last longer. Dr. Salem uses E.max and other high-quality porcelains, chosen for the look and strength your smile needs.
  • Composite veneers cost less and can often be done in one visit, but they stain more easily and don’t last as long.

Dr. Salem will explain both options and help you choose what’s best for your smile and your budget.

What to expect

Most patients need just two or three visits.

  1. Consultation. Dr. Salem listens to what you’d like to change, examines your teeth, and plans your new smile with you.
  2. Smile try-in. She places a preview of your new smile on your own teeth, so you can see the shape and length and ask for changes before anything is made.
  3. Preparation. A very thin layer of enamel is gently removed so the veneers sit naturally. A digital scan is sent to the dental lab, and temporary veneers may be placed while you wait.
  4. Placement. Dr. Salem checks the fit and color of each veneer, then bonds them securely to your teeth.

Is it right for you?

Veneers are a permanent choice, because a small amount of enamel is removed. That’s why Dr. Salem takes the time to walk you through every option first. For some patients, whitening, bonding, or clear aligners may be a better fit, and she’ll tell you honestly.

Your teeth and gums also need to be healthy first. Cavities and gum disease are treated before veneers are placed.

Caring for your veneers

  • Brush twice a day and floss daily
  • Use a non-abrasive toothpaste
  • Don’t bite your nails, chew ice, or open packages with your teeth
  • If you grind your teeth at night, wear a night guard to protect your veneers
  • Keep up with regular exams and cleanings

Questions patients ask

Does getting veneers hurt?
Most patients find it comfortable. The teeth are numbed during preparation, and only a very thin layer of enamel is removed. Some sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal.

How long do veneers last?
Porcelain veneers often last 10 to 15 years or more with good care. Composite veneers usually need to be repaired or replaced sooner.

Will my veneers look fake?
No. Dr. Salem designs each veneer to suit your face and matches the shade and shape to your natural teeth. The try-in lets you see and approve the look before your veneers are made.

How many veneers do I need?
It depends on your smile and your goals. Some patients need one or two to fix a chipped or discolored tooth. Others choose six to ten to change the whole smile.

Can veneers be whitened?
No. Porcelain doesn’t respond to whitening. If you want a whiter smile, whiten your natural teeth first, and your veneers will be matched to the new shade.

Can veneers stain or get cavities?
Porcelain resists stains very well. The veneer itself can’t get a cavity, but the tooth underneath and around it can, so good brushing and flossing still matter.

Veneers or crowns: what’s the difference?
A veneer covers only the front of the tooth and is mainly cosmetic. A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when a tooth is weak or badly damaged.

How much do veneers cost?
The cost depends on the material and how many veneers you choose. You’ll receive a clear written price at your consultation.

Does insurance cover veneers?
Veneers are usually considered cosmetic, so most dental plans don’t cover them. Call us and we’ll check your benefits for you.

Professional Teeth Whitening in Long Beach, CA: A Brighter Smile in One Visit

Want a whiter smile without waiting weeks for store-bought strips to work? At Salem Dentistry in Long Beach, Dr. Roxana Salem offers Zoom in-office whitening, which can brighten your teeth by several shades in a single visit, plus custom take-home kits if you prefer to whiten gradually.

Call 562-435-8339 or book online to schedule your whitening appointment.

Why patients choose Salem Dentistry for teeth whitening

  • A dentist checks your teeth first. Dr. Salem looks at your teeth and gums before you whiten, so cavities or gum problems are found before they cause pain.
  • Two ways to whiten. Zoom in the office for fast results, or custom trays to whiten at home at your own pace.
  • Advanced cosmetic training. Dr. Salem completed a year-long Comprehensive Esthetic & Restorative Residency.
  • A plan for crowns, veneers, and fillings. These don’t change color, so Dr. Salem helps you plan so your whole smile matches.
  • Comfort comes first. We protect your gums and take steps to limit sensitivity.
  • English, German, and Farsi spoken.

What makes teeth yellow?

Many everyday things stain or darken teeth:

  • Coffee, tea, red wine, and soda
  • Smoking and tobacco
  • Some medications
  • Natural aging, as enamel gets thinner and the darker layer underneath shows through

Stains start on the surface but can sink deeper over time. That makes them harder to remove with brushing or store-bought products.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes. Professional whitening is safe when it’s done or supervised by a dentist. Some patients feel temporary sensitivity in their teeth or gums for a day or two. It goes away on its own.

Zoom in-office whitening: what to expect

With Zoom, your teeth can become several shades brighter in about two hours.*

  1. A quick check. Dr. Salem examines your teeth and gums and notes your starting shade.
  2. Protection. Your lips and gums are carefully covered.
  3. Whitening. The Zoom gel is applied to your teeth, and a special light helps it work over a few short sessions.
  4. Soothing gel. A gel is applied at the end to reduce sensitivity.
  5. Your brighter smile. You leave the same day with whiter teeth and simple instructions for keeping them that way.

Take-home whitening kits

Prefer to whiten at your own pace? We make custom trays that fit your teeth and give you professional whitening gel to use at home. Most patients see results in about two weeks. The trays are also handy for touch-ups later.

Good to know before you whiten

Whitening works on natural teeth only. Crowns, veneers, and tooth-colored fillings won’t change color. If you have these on your front teeth, Dr. Salem will help you plan so everything matches. For deep stains that whitening can’t fix, porcelain veneers may be a better option.

Whitening also works best on clean teeth. If it has been a while since your last cleaning, we may suggest doing that first.

Questions patients ask

How long does whitening last?
It depends on your habits. Results often last from several months to a few years. Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco bring stains back faster. Touch-ups with take-home trays keep your smile bright.

Will whitening hurt?
Most patients are comfortable. Some feel sensitivity to cold for a day or two afterward. If your teeth are already sensitive, tell us and we’ll plan around it.

Which is better, in-office or take-home?
Both work. Zoom is faster, which is helpful before a wedding, photos, or an interview. Take-home trays are gradual and let you control how white you go.

Why not just use whitening strips?
Strips use weaker gel and don’t fit your teeth closely, so results are slower and can be uneven. They also skip the dental check that catches problems first.

Can I whiten if I have crowns or fillings on my front teeth?
Yes, but they will stay the same color. Dr. Salem will explain your options, which may include replacing older dental work after whitening so it matches.

Can I whiten while pregnant or nursing?
We recommend waiting until afterward.

Does insurance cover whitening?
Whitening is cosmetic, so dental insurance usually doesn’t pay for it. Call us at 562-435-8339 for current pricing.

  • Care in three languages: English, German, and Farsi.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. As the area heals, the bone grows around the implant and holds it firmly, creating a strong foundation.

Once healing is complete, a custom crown is attached to the implant to restore the look and function of the tooth. When several teeth in a row are missing, two or more implants can support a bridge.

Implant treatments we offer

  • Single tooth implants. One implant and one crown replace one missing tooth, without touching the teeth next to it.
  • Implant-supported bridges. Two or more implants hold a bridge that replaces several missing teeth in a row.

Advantages of dental implants

  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • Provide strong, stable support for chewing
  • Help preserve the jawbone after tooth loss
  • Help maintain your natural facial shape
  • Stay securely in place without slipping
  • Leave the neighboring teeth untouched
  • Can last for decades with proper care

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Many adults with one or more missing teeth are good candidates. The most important factors are:

  • Good overall health
  • Healthy gums
  • Enough jawbone to hold the implant

If you have lost bone, a bone graft can often make implant treatment possible. If you have gum disease, Dr. Salem will treat your gums first. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes slow healing, so she’ll talk with you about those as well.

Implants may also be an option if you’d like to replace a bridge or a partial denture with something more stable.

What to expect

  1. Consultation and 3D scan. Dr. Salem examines your mouth, takes a 3D scan in our office, and reviews your health history. She explains your options, the timeline, and the cost before anything begins.
  2. Preparing the site. If a damaged tooth needs to be removed or a bone graft is needed, that is done first.
  3. Placing the implant. With the area fully numb, Dr. Salem places the implant in the jawbone. Most patients say it is easier than they expected.
  4. Healing. Over the next few months, the bone bonds with the implant. If the tooth is in the front, ask about a temporary tooth so you’re not left with a gap.
  5. Your new tooth. Dr. Salem takes a digital scan and attaches your custom crown or bridge to the implant.

Caring for your implant

  • Brush twice a day and floss daily, just as you do for your natural teeth
  • Clean carefully around the gumline, where the implant meets the gum
  • Don’t smoke, since smoking is the leading cause of implant problems
  • Keep up with regular exams and cleanings

An implant can’t get a cavity, but the gums around it can still become infected, so good home care matters.

Questions patients ask

Does getting a dental implant hurt?
The area is completely numb during the procedure, so you’ll feel pressure but should not feel pain. Soreness for a few days afterward is normal and is usually managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

How long does the whole process take?
Usually a few months from start to finish. The implant needs time to bond with the bone before the final crown is placed. If you need an extraction or bone graft first, it takes longer. Dr. Salem will give you a timeline at your consultation.

How long do dental implants last?
With good care, the implant itself can last for decades. The crown on top may need to be replaced after many years of wear, like any crown.

Implant or bridge: which is better?
Both are good options. An implant stands on its own, leaves the neighboring teeth untouched, and helps preserve the jawbone. A bridge is usually faster and needs no surgery, but it relies on the teeth next to the gap. Dr. Salem offers both and will go over the pros, cons, and costs for your situation.

What if I don’t have enough bone?
A bone graft can often rebuild the area so an implant can be placed. Your 3D scan shows exactly how much bone you have.

Am I too old for dental implants?
There is no upper age limit. Your overall health and the condition of your gums and bone matter far more than your age.

How much do dental implants cost?
The cost depends on how many implants you need and whether you need an extraction or bone graft. You’ll receive a clear written treatment plan and cost at your consultation.

Does insurance cover dental implants?
Some plans cover part of implant treatment, and coverage varies widely. We accept all PPO dental plans and Medi-Cal Dental, and we do not accept HMO plans. Call us and we’ll check your benefits for you.

Signs you may have an infected tooth

  • Severe or lingering toothache
  • Pain when chewing or biting
  • Strong sensitivity to hot or cold that doesn’t go away
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • A small bump, like a pimple, on the gum
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • A bad taste or bad breath that won’t go away
  • Aching in the jaw

If you notice any of these, call us. The sooner we treat it, the easier it is to save the tooth.

Why might I need a root canal?

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. When the pulp becomes infected or badly inflamed, it can cause serious pain. Most infections start with a deep cavity that wasn’t treated in time, or with a crack, chip, or injury to the tooth.

Once bacteria reach the pulp, the infection won’t heal on its own. Without treatment, it can spread and lead to an abscess or other health problems. A root canal removes the infected tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it, so you keep your tooth instead of losing it.

What to expect during your root canal

  1. X-rays. Dr. Salem takes X-rays to see the full extent of the problem.
  2. Numbing. She numbs the area completely so you stay comfortable.
  3. Cleaning. A small protective sheet keeps the tooth clean and dry. Dr. Salem makes a small opening, gently removes the infected tissue, and cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth.
  4. Sealing. The tooth is filled and sealed.
  5. Crown. In most cases, a crown is placed afterward to protect the tooth and restore its strength, so it can last for many years.

Most root canals are finished in one or two visits.

After your root canal

Your tooth may feel a little sore for a few days. This is normal, and over-the-counter pain relievers usually help. Avoid chewing hard foods on that side until your crown is placed. Call us if you have swelling or pain that gets worse instead of better.

Once your crown is in place, care for the tooth like any other: brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with regular exams.

Questions patients ask

Does a root canal hurt?
With the tooth fully numbed, most patients say it feels much like getting a filling. The infection is what hurts, and the root canal is what ends that pain.

How many visits does it take?
Usually one or two, depending on the tooth and the infection. The crown is placed at a follow-up visit.

Is it better to pull the tooth instead?
Saving your natural tooth is usually the better choice. A missing tooth can cause the neighboring teeth to shift and often needs to be replaced with an implant or bridge, which means more treatment and more cost. If a tooth truly can’t be saved, Dr. Salem also performs extractions and will explain your replacement options.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?
In most cases, yes. A tooth that has had a root canal is more fragile, and a crown protects it from cracking.

How long does a tooth last after a root canal?
With a crown and good care, a tooth that has had a root canal can last for many years, often a lifetime.

Can I be seen today?
Often, yes. Call 562-435-8339 as early in the day as you can and we’ll do our best to see you the same day.

Do you take my insurance?
We accept all PPO dental plans and Medi-Cal Dental. We do not accept HMO plans. Call us and we’ll check your benefits for you.

When is a toothache an emergency?
If you have swelling in your face or jaw along with a fever, or any trouble swallowing or breathing, go to the nearest emergency room right away.

Questions parents ask

When should my child first see a dentist?
The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend a first visit within six months of the first tooth, and no later than the first birthday. We welcome children from 6 months old.

What happens at a first visit?
It’s short and easy. Dr. Salem looks at your child’s teeth and gums, checks how the teeth are coming in, and answers your questions about brushing, teething, and thumb-sucking. Very young children can sit on a parent’s lap.

My child is afraid of the dentist. What do you do?
We never rush. We show and explain each tool before using it, let your child set the pace, and keep you in the room. Toys and TVs in the waiting room help kids settle in before the visit starts.

How often should my child see the dentist?
Every six months for an exam and cleaning, unless Dr. Salem recommends coming in more often.

Do baby teeth really matter if they fall out anyway?
Yes. Baby teeth help your child chew, speak clearly, and hold space for the adult teeth. A cavity in a baby tooth can cause pain and infection and can affect the adult tooth growing underneath.

What are sealants?
Sealants are thin protective coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where most children’s cavities start. They take a few minutes to apply and don’t hurt.

When should my child have an orthodontic check?
Around age 7 is a good time for a first look. Some bite and jaw problems are much easier to correct while a child is still growing, and an early check lets us plan the right time for treatment.

Do you take my insurance?
We accept all PPO dental plans and Medi-Cal Dental. We do not accept HMO plans. Not sure what you have? Call us at 562-435-8339 and we’ll check your benefits for you.

What if my child has a dental emergency?
Call us right away at 562-435-8339. We often see toothaches and injuries the same day. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, keep it moist in milk and come in immediately.
